Religious Study Unit

"For us, it is a question of LOVE AND ONLY OF LOVE, of a passion which like that of Jesus should induce us to give our life for the children and young people whom the Lord confided to us."

Br. Alvaro Rodriquez Echeverria, FSC
Superior General

Rationale

Consistent to the DLSC vision as a member-institution of De La Salle Philippines and the world-wide system of Catholic institutions, LSMO provides the Religious Studies Unit (RSU) spearhead the used for a holistic, integrated spiritual formation that will announce the good news of salvation and still answer the needs of sophisticated young men entrusted to our care. As a Catholic center of Excellence, DLSC through LSMO—Religious Studies Unit seeks to provide spiritual formation program by incorporating Religious Studies in the Academic Curriculum. RSU functions within its general sphere of duties but is also works hand in hand with the other academic subjects, as well as the three other major components of LSMO: Lasallian Formation, Campus Ministry and Social Action Units. It is tasked with catechizing the young using scriptures and traditions and with focus on the important dimensions of our faith, namely: Doctrine (the Christian Catholic Creed), Morals (the Values Dimension) and the Worship (the Sacraments and the Church's Liturgy). Through RSU, De La Salle Canlubang continues to be consistent in living up the Lasallian core values of Religio, Mores and Cultura and carries out the Church's mission of evangelization and the Lasallian mission of touching hearts.

Vision

We envision the Religious Studies Unit as an integral part of the academic and spiritual formation and contributory to the evolution of DLSC into a leading Catholic Center of Excellence.

Mission

Faithful to the three-fold ideals of Religio, Mores and Cultura, RSU is tasked to effect an integrated spiritual formation among the youth entrusted to us. It gives emphasis on living faithfully the fundamental Gospel values and principles outlined to us through God's revelation and Church's living traditions, RSU becomes a means for us to "living a way of life that integrates our minds, wills and hearts with its doctrine, morals and worship within a sustaining community of fellow disciples of Christ" (CFFC 0610).

Objectives

  • To become contributory to the DLSC's vision of a leading Catholic Center of Excellence through a holistic and integrated spiritual formation of those entrusted to our care---the young.
  • To carry out Church's mission of evangelization through proper catechism/instruction/teaching of the fundamental values and principles revealed to us by God through Jesus Christ.
  • To serve as link and spring board of Campus Ministry Unit in the instruction of our faith and in keeping alive the spiritual life of the school.
  • To empower the students to live their "spirit of faith", "zeal for service"; and "communion in mission" in and out of the school.

Programs/Activities

  • RELSONE – fresh students are instructed on God's revelation based on the Holy Scriptures and the Living Traditions of the Church
  • RELSTWO – deals with the Church's History and Sacraments. It is designed to educate the DLSC students about the beginnings and development of Christianity and to give comprehensive study of the Sacraments of faith, recognizing its value as the "doors to the experience of God's action in our life."
  • RELSTRI - focuses on Christian moral life as centered on Christ's call to discipleship and as our response to God's love. The course guides the students to develop a deep sense of responsibility and to form a right and more Christian conscience based on the moral teachings of the Gospel and on the magisterium of the Church.
  • RELSFOR – values and ethics in a profession. The course is a study of the Catholic Social Teachings as embodied in the social encyclicals of the Popes and other magisterium of the Church. It gives emphasis on integral human development as propounded in various Church's documents. It tackles relevant questions on values, social justice, human rights, option for the poor, ecology and other current social and ethical issues.

Note: the courses are prerequisite to each other except for RELSFOR

  • Teachers for Religious studies can organize the students to have at least 2 hours of community service/project each month, i.e., parish work, catechism, visiting poor areas, prison ministry, etc. This could be a requisite for passing the course
  • Other activities organized by respective Religious Studies Professors
