Social Action Unit

"There is still much work to be done. As long as there are children who go hungry, who have not experienced what it is to be loved and cared for; as long as there are young men and women who are on the fringes of society, who have not had privilege of getting a decent education - our work will continue."

Br. Edmundo Fernandez, FSC
Br.Visitor, Philippine District

Rationale

In consonance to the Church's preferential option for the poor and to the Brothers' commitment and responsiveness to the needs of the poor, De La Salle- Canlubang commitment and responsiveness to the needs of the poor, De La Salle-Canlubang commits to undertake creative initiatives and sustainable projects for the poor through the Social Action Unit (SAU)'s thrust to take initiatives in directing involvement in service for our least brethren and marginalized sectors and provides venues for DLSC community to actualize their social responsibility, to heighten awareness and involvement of DLSC in social, political, and economic concerns. Programs/Activities

"LINGAP" Project

The Lasallian Instructional Gift to Adopted Pupils (LINGAP) is a DLSC long term social action project. LINGAP is a scholarship program that provides quality Christian and academic education to poor but deserving graduates of the public schools surrounding the DLSC campus. It is a full scholarship grant to these students from Gr. 7 all the way to College. Through the LINGAP program, DLSC hopes to share Lasallian education with those who have less in life, and prepare them for a better place in society.

"SASVO"

Social Action Service Volunteers or SASVO is a group of student volunteers organized by the Social Action Unit to foster the spirit of volunteerism and sense of service among the students of DLSC. It is hoped that SASVO becomes a venue to instill in our DLSC community, particularly the students, the need to respond to the challenges of our time, to actualize their social responsibility and to heighten awareness and involvement of DLSC in social, political and economic concerns. SASVO serves also a continuity of the community service program experienced by the students National Service Training Program ( NSTP).

National Service Training Program – Civic Welfare Training Service (NSTP-CWTS)

The NSTP-CWTS and Community Service Program are part of the students' curriculum and are requirements for graduation. Students are educated in terms of social awareness and community development through the integrated values of education, community service and civic welfare. They are also asked to have a "hands-on" experience on community service and development through the implementation of the project the proposed for the betterment of the partner communities of the DLSC Social Action Unit.

Timbao Pre-School

This is a DAY CARE program for children from low income families in Barangay Timbao, Biñan, Laguna. It aims to provide intellectual enrichment to these children with hope that they could improve their everyday effectiveness in dealing with the present and preparing for the future. The program provides as well a range of services not only to children but also to their families in four (4) aspects:

  • Education
  • Health
  • Parent's Involvement
  • Social Service
Tutorial Services

Many of the community partners of the Social Action Unit, namely:

  • Inchican Elementary School
  • Sto.Domingo Elementary School
  • Don Jose Elementary School
  • Pulong Sta. Cruz Elementary School
  • Malamig Elementary School
  • Loma Elementary School
  • Timbao Elementary School
  • Langkiwa Elementary School
  • Sto. Tomas Elementary School

request tutorial services from our students volunteers and NSTP students. This prompted SAU to include it in its programs/ activities as a response to the needs of our partners. It is a fact that most public schools particularly in the elementary level suffer shortage of public school teachers. SAU therefore, through SASVO and NSTP students, wishes to address the need for tutorials in Mathematics, English, Science and if possible, Information Technology to the above mentioned community partners.

"BigKis" Program

"BigKis" or Bigyan Kita ng Serbisyo is a summer service program designed to provide students, faculty, administrators and staff opportunities to share their resources, talents, knowledge, self…through community service work at the grassroots level of the nearby communities surrounding DLSC and perhaps, in provincial partner communities. "BigKis" could be another venue for the whole DLSC community to dedicate their time and talents in the service of others. It may provide formation training and seminars on values education, organization development, entrepreneurship, livelihood and micro-financing projects to our partner communities. Done annually during summer, "BigKis"program gives opportunity to the DLSC community to play part in developing better communities.

Note: SAU may also organize short-term activities like fund raising, symposia, trainings, etc., during the school year.
